VIPD Shows Support for Witnesses of Tragic Event

September 06, 2019

ST. THOMAS – On the eve of Wednesday, September 4, 2019 Deputy Chief of Police, David Cannonier and officers of the Virgin Islands Police Department attended a townhall style gathering at the City Seventh Day Adventist Church on St. Thomas.

This gathering came about as a result of an incident that occurred on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at approximately 10:16 a.m. where Virgin Islands Police Department officers and members of the Major Crime Unit responded to shots fired on Seventh Day Street on St. Thomas. Amijah Charles was killed by gunfire and a minor victim was shot about the body (see press release about that incident here).

The church was amidst their worship time when members were able to witness the tragedy.

At the invite of church leadership and its members, Chief Cannonier assured the audience of the department’s commitment to serving and protecting the community as he described his role in the tragedy to the audience. “I was the second on the scene that day", Cannonier emotionally described. “I was the one that took that child in my vehicle to the hospital as he was shot about the body.”

The message focused on individuals having the assurance that they can come forward and not be in fear of retribution. The chief went on to share his life-long experiences as a police officer. “This is my community and there are certain unwritten rules that were understood, Cannonier expressed. “You don’t harm children and you don’t commit crimes in the vicinity of a church.”
